A group of residents who were alarmed at the ease in which our native vegetation could be destroyed without community consultation, came together to form Olinda Action Group (OAG) on 2 July 2002. Our common ground is:
We choose to live in the hills
We value the rich diversity of the native flora and fauna that we live amongst
In an area that has many pressures placed on it from environmental weeds and economic development, we wish to promote the needs and wishes of the people who live here.
From the death of this tree an opportunity has arisen for us to come together as a community and work toward a shared vision for the future.
Olinda Action Group Inc. (OAG) is a non-profit community based group of hills residents.
On 24 June 2002, one of just a handful of old growth Mountain Ash, Eucalyptus regnans, remaining in the Olinda township was lost to the hills community. At the time of its death it was 100 years old, 43 metres tall and had a spread of 22 metres. It provided a habitat to native animals.
OAG aims to
Preserve and enhance the local flora and fauna of Olinda and its surrounds
Ensure the built environment reflects, and is consistent with, the local character and the natural environment
Give a voice to the Olinda community
Work with the Shire of Yarra Ranges & Parks Victoria to promote community consultation and connectedness.
OAG meets on the second Thursday of the month from February to December, 7.00 to 9.00pm at Olinda Community House, next to Olinda pool, Olinda. Venue changes for the Winter months (June-Aug), please contact us for details
OAG meetings are open meetings. Anyone with an interest in OAG's aims are welcome to attend. (Financial members have voting rights)
Come along to any of these and be a part of your community
